Rojo Amanecer is a not-to-be-missed New Year Eve celebration for peace, dignity and justice for all. It is honoring the 20th anniversary of the Zapatistas and the 10th anniversary of the uprising in Chiapas, Mexico. It is a call to all, especially youth of color, to get involved in bettering their communities and the world through education and action. It calls for Peace and Dignity through its all-encompassing edu-tainment or education and entertainment line up. This once annual event is a virtual who's who of the East L.A. and Chicano independent arts scene. Its anti-violence, drug, and alcohol message is an important alternative to the usual parties and mayhem that are offered to youth and families on that night.
Performers for the day include a variety of acts in various genres, styles, and mediums. Music from Indigenous to funk, hip hop to punk will be offered by pioneers of the scene, Aztlan Underground, just added Roots Reggae with Quinto Sol, hardcore rockers, Resistant Culture, Resist and Exist, and Opaque, hip hoppers El Vuh, and fusion funk/blues bands Ollin, Phatso, and the just added Mezklah. Poetry and spoken word reflecting the times will be presented by a legion of poets including Lilia Ramirez, Mixpe, Pedro Reyes, ruben funkahuatl guevara, Tezozomoc, and the Xicana indigenous poets and singers In Lak Ech. The event will begin with traditional Native drummers Urban Hawk, and includes The Radical Teen Cheerleaders, and a one day group art exhibit and films by both emerging and established artists.
The event is sponsored by over 20 Los Angeles organizations and groups including Sol Foundation, Xican@ Records and Film, Los Angeles Indigenous Peoples Alliance and more. This extraordinary and historical night is part of series of events honoring the EZLN (Zapatista National Liberation Army) 20 y 10: El Fuego y La Palabra- "The Fire and the Word" Campaign called for by Subcomandante Marcos of the EZLN. Similar events are taking place around the world, including a Mexico City concert with Cafe Tacuba, Maldita Vecindad and others.
